Wollner’s third feature was selected for screening in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at Cannes, where it won the Prix Un Concern Regard, the division’s top prize. It was then screened at the Sydney Film Festival, Karlovy Vary Film Festival, New Zealand International Film Festival, and Melbourne Film Festival. At the Sarajevo Film Festival, he won the Heart of Sarajevo Grand Prize. It will have its North American premiere in September at the Toronto Film Festival. It has already been confirmed to appear at other festivals, including the New York Film Festival.
The German-Austrian co-production is produced by The Barricades and ZDF with Austrian Pennsylvania Film as co-production partner. The film received funding from the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM).
German distributor eksystent filmverleih Kijas was released in German cinemas on August 6. Charades handles international sales. In North America, 1-2 Special is handling distribution, and is scheduled for a theatrical release in early 2027.
Following changes made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this spring, films that have won major awards at select international film festivals are also eligible for submission to the International Feature Film category. The five nominated films will be selected from this shortlist and announced on January 21, 2027.
The Oscars ceremony is scheduled to be held on March 14.
