Die, Die Delta Pi II is a rarity… a no-budget neo-slasher homage that REALLY delivers

A movie called Die, die Delta Pi II: The Burned One is automatically immune from any criticism. You really CAN’T look at it objectively, because that means putting it on the same level as something like Holocaust or that of Kobayashi The human condition trilogy. These films are actually artistic commentaries on existence; this movie, I think it’s very safe to say, is NOT.

I feel like the only way to see this thing again is to embrace my inner Joe Bob Briggs. It’s clear you can’t enter Die, die Delta Pi II: The Burned One with the same objective as, say, a Roger Ebert or a Leonard Maltin. To give you a good idea of what this film considers important, I think there are only about fifteen of us seconds in the film before the first set of exposed female breasts arrive. I don’t know how the filmmakers did it, but this may be the first film in cinema history where a character is LESS naked to take a shower.

As the title suggests, there was indeed a The The Delta Pi first part. It came out in 2013 and no, I don’t know how or why it took them 13 years later to give us a sequel. Maybe it’s one of those Godfather II situations where you set the bar so high that you’re a little worried about tarnishing the entire franchise with a subpar, ultra-late sequel.

Amanda Orsini plays one of the two protagonists of Die, Die Delta Pi II.

Both The Who Delta Pi the films are directed by a guy named Sean Donohue. His work includes films like Death-Scort Service Part 2: The Naked Dead, Satan Lives: The Rise of the Illuminati Hotties And Hobocop. Believe it or not, there is actually a real life Cinematic universe of Sean Donohue where some of these films overlap. He’s obviously a true movie buff, as evidenced by his tributes. For example, there is a scene at the beginning of Die, Die Delta Pi II: The Burnt One is the sequel we’ve been waiting for THIRTEEN years. The Delta Pi 2 which functions both as an ode to Fast times at Ridgemont High AND Bikini Car Wash Company 2. Needless to say, this Donohue guy knows his stuff.

Yes, there is some sort of plot to this film. This is indeed a sorority, and they are trying to recruit new members or raise money for something. Either way, that’s about as much plot as we have and, frankly, about as much plot as we need to make this thing work. I guess it makes a little more sense if you watched the first one The Who Delta Pi movie, but I doubt it’s essential to enjoy Part 2.

The two main characters – played by Dare Taylor and Amanda Orsini – attempt to reform the titular sorority, which is apparently cursed by… something. So one night they invite their idiot boyfriends and three potential sorority sisters over for a drunken night out and – well, you’ll NEVER believe what happens next.

Once you turn 21, you MUST choose one as your permanent aesthetic.

No, literally, because they actually subvert the expected slasher shenanigans this time around. Without giving too much of the story away, let’s just say that a mysterious… event… happens and the film turns into something of a procedural thriller for a little while. Somehow this negative zero budget production becomes a BETTER spiritual remake of I know what you did last summer that the real I know what you did last summer spiritual remake we got last year. And when it’s time for the chaos to finally die down, we get some GREAT practical gore effects in this thing. It kind of feels like the people who made it have a deep respect for stuff like The fire And Don’t enter the houseand it shows true taste and class.

The film zigzags when you expect it to zig and many characters you don’t think will be killed off are eliminated rather abruptly. The reveal of the killer feels like a bit of a last-second ass stunt, but in a movie like this, not only is it forgivable, it’s actually quite charming. The final cat-and-mouse chase is also surprisingly effective…with a fairly new sequel to Part 3 tucked in at the very end of the film.

Joel D. Wynkoop STEALS this movie as the stereotypical sadistic football coach.

But here’s the most shocking thing The Who Delta Pi II: This is actually HILARIOUS. As it progressed, I found myself legitimately lolling at several points in the film. There’s a GREAT scene pretty early on where legendary Z actor Joel D. Wynkoop bursts into the dorm room of two football players and starts putting them down. You can tell that most of his lines were improvised and the director obviously didn’t want to lose any of Wynkoop’s impromptu brilliance. This goes on forever and it made me laugh out loud. This is something modern films RARELY do.

The Who Delta Pi II is a minor miracle of a film. It’s a true labor of love made by people who are obviously not in it for the money and the end result is a truly entertaining B-movie throwback that left a huge smile on my face. Consider Rhonda Shear’s cameo from Up all night The fame and the film’s blazing 67-minute running time and you’ve got all the makings of a stellar late-Saturday night distraction. Don’t let all those snobs at A24 and Criterion fool you – The Who Delta Pi II This is what REAL independent horror cinema looks like.
