Goodfellas has acquired international rights from Indonesian director Kamila Andini The Four Seasons in Java Before its world premiere in the Centerpiece program at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Produced by Eva Isfansyah through Indonesian production company Forka Films, the film stars Putri Marino as Pertiwi, a woman who returns to her village after years in prison and is forced to confront the people, memories, and violence that shaped her past.
Pertiwi’s return was rejected by much of the community and even her own family. As she begins to confront the circumstances surrounding her past, she embarks on a deeply personal journey to redefine her understanding of home, family, justice, and peace.
Combining psychodrama, mystery, and elements of magical realism, the film explores the effects of violence against women while examining memory, trauma, social judgment, and the possibility of healing.
Andini’s previous films have been widely screened and won awards on the international festival circuit. Before, now and thenIt premiered in competition at the Berlinale in 2022, and was also handled internationally by Goodfellas, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Laura Basocki.
June It premiered in Toronto in 2021, where it won the Platform Award and subsequently became Indonesia’s nominee for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards.
“The Four Seasons in Java “It’s a story about a woman who has to face the different chapters of her life and the consequences of what happened to her,” Andini said.
“Pertewie’s journey is very personal and intimate. It’s about finding peace and discovering herself, but it’s also about questioning how society defines what’s right and what’s wrong, and who believes it and who doesn’t.”
In addition to Putri Marino, the cast is headed by Arya Saloka, Christine Hakim, and Hanna Malasan, with supporting roles played by Isewadi Pratama, Harji Sundari, Nagra Kotsar Pakusadio, Tutus Rasiti, Shuvia Sherin, Dwika Pradnyana, and Hanna Aritha.
The Four Seasons in Java It is an international co-production that includes Indonesia, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. The project has previously participated in international industry platforms including CineMart, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), the Berlinale Co-production Market, and the Venice Gap Finance Market. It has also received support from international film funds including the Hubert Bals Fund, the Dutch Film Fund, Sørfond and CNC France.
