The race for Best International Feature Film is heating up at the 99th Academy Awards, with countries in full swing selecting films to submit for the 2027 campaign.

This year’s competition will see films submitted by the September 30 deadline, with the Oscars shortlist of 15 films to be revealed on December 15. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce its five finalist films on nominations day on January 21, with the 99th Academy Awards set for March 14.

In addition to the traditional method followed by a country or region of submitting a film as an official selection by approved committees, a non-English language film can now be submitted by winning the qualifying grand prize at one of six festivals: Cannes (Palme d’Or), Berlin (Golden Bear), Busan (Best Film), Sundance (Grand Jury Prize of World Cinema), Toronto (Platform Prize) and Venice (Golden Lion).

Additionally, the eligible film will be listed as the nominee rather than the country or region, with the director’s name listed on the plaque after the film title and then the country or region if applicable, in accordance with AMPAS guidelines.
