The 51st Toronto Film Festival is celebrating with a big event this year, and the festivities are about to begin. The festival kicks off on Thursday, September 10 and continues until September 20, and will showcase a huge program that includes 293 feature films, 45 short films, and 32 premieres.
This year’s festival kicks off with Sian Hedder’s inspiring drama Being a humanstarring Ruth Madeley as disability rights activist Judith Heuman, serves as Roy Thomson Hall’s opening night film. Today’s premier films include musical horror stuffedstarring Jodie Comer and Harry Melling, and the documentary Rebecca Hunt rapino, Profile of soccer star Megan Rapinoe.
The Presentations section also features high-profile international shows including those of Anton Corbijn killing talent, John Madden Onward and sidewaysChris Rock Misty greenthe South Korean political thriller by Hor Jin-ho killer(s) and Tim Blake Nelson The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd.

Genre fans and late-night moviegoers prepare for a spook-fest with TIFF’s 2026 Midnight Madness program. The lineup starts with Joshua Giuliano hitting river It concludes with a comic book adaptation by Duncan Jones Rogue soldier. The section also features the world premiere of Anna Biller’s long-awaited follow-up film love witch, Medieval ghost story horror face, Along with Paolo Streppoli’s psychological thriller IUD.
The closing night film is by the Canadian director Yann Lanouette Turgeon‘s Sports drama Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legendabout the early years of Canadian racing legend Gilles Villeneuve. Other special concert titles and presentations throughout the festival include new works from international favorites, featuring world and North American premieres from directors such as Diego Luna (ash), Valeska Griesbach (The adventure you dreamed of(And Anthony Chen)We are all strangers).
The festival is also embarking on a major structural expansion this year with the launch of TIFF: The Market at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, hosting industry activity alongside the additions of new venues such as the John Bassett Theatre. The previously announced TIFF Tribute Awards will continue to honor outstanding global filmmakers, stars and emerging voices during its opening weekend.
In addition, several awards will be voted on during the festival, the most important of which are the People’s Choice Awards, which are chosen by the public and often predict Oscar success.
The 51st Toronto Film Festival takes place on Thursday, September 10-20, 2025.
