Love is a monster (Love is a monster). Costa Rican writer and director Neto Villalobos Brenes (It’s all about the feathers, Helmet heads) chose a title for his latest film that will make you sit upright, deal with the questions in your head, or both. A terrifying suspense thriller, starring Paulina Garcia (Gloria) and full of fear and inequality, will have its world premiere in the main segment of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 14.
Filmed in the South Pacific region of Costa Rica. Love is a beast Chilean star Garcia appears as a grandmother determined to make the most of the time she has left with her six-year-old granddaughter. After her daughter cuts off all contact, she must regain her trust, only for tragedy to strike. What is Grandma willing to do to protect those she loves?
“She is forced to make choices she never imagined, pushing love, loyalty, and survival into increasingly tense territory,” notes the synopsis for the film that explores family, love, age, and class inequality.
Love is a monster Villalobos sees Brenes return to Toronto, where his previous two features also appeared.
“A few years ago, I lost the person I loved most, my mother,” Villalobos-Brenes says in explaining his dramatic shift from two comedies to a dark, genre-packed cinematic journey. “As everyday life became more difficult for her, she found in her granddaughter the strength to keep fighting. That experience raised the question at the heart of this film: How far would she go to protect the person she loved most?”

Love is a monster It also stars Natalia Regidor, Gloriana Vargas and Erika Reckendorf. The film is written by Villalobos Brenes, cinematography by Nicholas Wong Diaz, and edited by Ybran Aswad and Villalobos Brenes. Bendita Film Sales is a free online retailer.
Garcia, who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival for her performance in the film Gloriashares: “I don’t think love really has limits. You only find out when you’re put to the test and find yourself doing things you never imagined you could do. And when it comes to a child, that feeling becomes even stronger. And you’re willing to do absolutely anything to protect them.”
